Medicare Advantage (Part C)

Medicare Part C - Medicare Advantage (MA) is the new name for Medicare + Choice. All MA plans must cover all Part A and Part B benefits. MA plans cost sharing must be actuarially equivalent to Medicare Parts A and B, but may be different for specific services. Many MA plans also have Part D prescription drug coverage.

In order to enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan, you must be eligible for Part A and be enrolled in Part B

The types of Medicare Advantage plans are:

  • Health Maintenance Organizations (HMOs) - some have a Point-of-Service (POS) benefit
  • Preferred Provider Organizations (PPOs) - local and regional
  • Private Fee-For-Service Plans (PFFS) - pays instead of Medicare
  • Special Need Plans (SNPs) - persons with unique disease care needs
  • Medical Savings Accounts (MSAs)

If you decide to join a Medicare Advantage Plan, you will not need a Medicare Supplement policy because the provider of that plan will generally offer many of the same benefits. You will, however, still have to pay the monthly Medicare Part B premium of $110.50 (in 2010) to Medicare.
