Health Care Reforms Help Children

Children with pre-existing conditions will no longer be denied family plan coverage.

Starting in September of this year, children under 19 years of age with pre-existing conditions cannot be denied coverage by their family's health plan. This is good news for families that have been forced to purchase high risk coverage at high rates to cover a child.

The Coverage for Children With Pre-existing Conditions Provision
is  expected to be clarified by a Department of Health and Human Services within the next few weeks.

More good news! Health plans that offer coverage to dependents will be required to extend coverage up to age 26. The child need not be residing with the parents, need not be claimed as a dependent for tax purposes, and may be married. Coverage will not be extended to the spouse of a married child, nor their children.
